Signature project: American Film Market

Rows of dark theater seats

Client: Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA) · annual event since 1981 · 23 consecutive years

The American Film Market is one of the largest film business events in the world. It isn’t a festival, it’s a marketplace: every November, thousands of producers, distributors, sales agents and financiers from more than 70 countries come together to finance, license and sell independent films. It was founded in 1981 and is run by IFTA, the trade association for independent film and television.

Sole architect, planner and on-site lead of the entire IT operation for a major international trade show. It’s a multi-month build on an immovable deadline, planned, documented and executed end to end every year.

At the Fairmont, screenings run in the AMC theater at the Westfield Century City mall next door.

Moving three times in three years was the toughest stretch of the project. The Delfina and the Palms were one-year venues that weren’t designed around a show of this shape, so each move meant a new network design, a new office layout and a new venue IT team to work with, all on the same fixed deadline.

Budgets have tightened at the same time. On-site prep time at the hotel has been cut, overtime is limited and the crew is smaller, so a smaller team has to deliver the same build in less time. That puts even more weight on the planning and the runbook, so every hour on site counts.

Planning and design

  • Own the annual IT plan: inventory, timeline, staffing, vendors and the full runbook
  • Size and stage equipment for about 20 year-round staff and 50 to 60 peak users
  • Seasonal ramp from July: onboard and offboard returning and new seasonal staff

Site build

  • Coordinate a whole-hotel conversion: guest rooms become staff and exhibitor offices, plus a rented theater for screenings
  • Define network requirements with hotel and theater IT in facilities we don’t own
  • Engineer around the constraint that ballrooms and third-floor staff rooms share one subnet

Imaging and deployment

  • Author the annual golden laptop image that the rental vendor clones, so each user deploys in minutes

Cutover, show and leadership

  • Lead the office-to-hotel cutover and run systems for the duration of the show
  • Direct a team of three and coordinate Admin and Production departments without formal authority

Demonstrates: fixed-deadline project planning, vendor and venue coordination, network architecture in non-owned facilities, mass imaging and deployment, documentation discipline and on-site leadership.
